About the Ride Info Box

Monster is a looping steel coaster in Iowa Farm. It opened on June 4, 2016. It is currently the fourth roller coaster operating at the park (counting The Underground, which is technically a roller coaster). It became the park's second steel and looping roller coaster after the Dragon.

The coaster features a 90 degree lift hill straight up, and is 133 feet tall. It then goes down a 101 degree drop (flipping back inside). It reaches a top speed of 65 mph. There are 5 inversions and 2500 feet of track.

Lights

It contains an elaborate nighttime lighting system designed by KCL Engineering of Des Moines. Along the track are 137 40-watt RGB LED spotlights, and there are 46 500-watt RGB LED spotlights on the ground. If all the lights were turned on to bright white at the same time, it would be 28480 watts. (And this is using LEDs. Imagine how much power it would take if they were all traditional spotlight bulbs.)

The coaster starts with the track lighting fading through a multi-color rainbow pattern.

As the coaster climbs the straight-up lift hill, ground spotlights pulse red like a heartbeat. Speakers on the lift hill tower play various horror sounding creepy music or rock music. Once the car gets to the top and starts to go over the hill, all lights on the coaster go off and the riders drop in to darkness.

As the car zooms around the track, the track lights glow red as if leaving a streak of fire, then they slowly fade to blue. The car with then be "painting" the track blue, and after a short time, the blue is slowly turned in to the multi-color rainbow pattern.

There is another sequence where the track turns a solid green color. This happens when the ride is in a standy mode, such as when a car is unable to be delopyed on time. It is meant to be a visual indication to the workers that the ride is holding (even if there is a car still in progress).

The system is reprogramable, and supports up to four sequences. For July 4th, a new ground sequence was running which would make the ground lights fade from red, to white, to blue.

Warning Signs

This coaster is also notable for having some of the most threatening warning signs to appear in an amusement park - but not because of the ride. The ride warning signs are typical, but around the ride are warning signs to prevent guests from climbing the fence to retrieve dropped articles. They read:

WARNING
Barbed Wire

BARBED WIRE RISKS SERIOUS INJURY.
DO NOT JUMP FENCE - GO BACK NOW!
LOST ITEMS RETURNED THE NEXT DAY.
VIOLATORS WILL BE EJECTED FROM PARK!

(STOP) CUT YOUR LOSSES...GO BACK!

These signs started appearing around July 6, along with the addition of barbed wire along the inside fencing around the coaster. There are currently over XX of these signs. Adventuerland is serious about preventing someone from doing something foolish.

Dinosaurs

A few dinosaur statues were added during the 2017 season.

Trivia

  • The Monster was the first coaster of it's kind in America, but several more have opened since. Hang Time, at Knott's Berry Farms in California, and Adrenaline Peak at Oaks Park in Oregon, are similar coasters that also include an animated custom lighting package done by KCL Engineering.
