Dragon Island originally opened as Riverview in 1980. In 1990, it was rethemed and renamed to Dragon Island when The Dragon steel roller coaster was added.

Dragon island is currently one of only two sections of the park that have clearly marked signs at their entrance indicating the name of the area.

The lamp posts and Mirror Maze mirrors were originally at Riverview Park.
